Around the Giglachsee

Hut hike from Ursprungalm near Schladming in Austria – 3 or 4 days

Level: T2 with large sections T3
Period: Mid June – mid September

Hiking times mentioned below are adjusted to hiking for beginners.

Day 1: Parkplatz Ursprungalm to Ignaz-Mattishütte

Park the car at Parkplatz Ursprungalm (1610 m) or take the bus from Schladming and hike to the Ignaz-Mattishütte (1986 m) – 3,3 km, 2:00, ↑ 380 m, level: T2. This is a good option if you have a late afternoon start. You can have a swim in the Giglachsee.

Day 2: Ignaz-Mattishütte to Keinprechthütte 

Hike from the Ignaz-Mattishütte towards the Fahrlechhütte (1648 m) at the Duisitzkarsee, passing through rolling landscapes. This part of the route includes some steeper downhill sections – 4,9 km, 2:30, ↑ 170 m, ↓ 510 m, level: T3. You can have a swim in the Duisitzkarsee.

Hike on to the Keinprechthütte (1850 m) – 4,5 km, 2:30  ↑ 370 m, ↓ 150 m, level: T2/T3. The first section to the Keinprechthütte winds through forested paths and open alpine pastures. The last part of the trail climbs pretty steeply, but it is a hike with a mix of shaded forest paths and rocky, panoramic viewpoints.

Day 3/4: Keinprechthütte to Giglachseehütte or Ursprungalm

Hike from the Keinprechthütte to the Giglachseehütte – 7.4 km, 5:00, ↑ 650 m, ↓ 600 m. Level: T3. The trail from the Keinprechthütte climbs steeply towards the Rotmandlspitze. Expect steep and rocky sections. After reaching the Rotmandlspitze summit, the trail descends to the Giglachsee, first steeply, then more gradually.

Stay the night in the Giglachseehütte to make it a 4 day trip. Or hike on to Ursprungalm – 2,5 km, 1:00,  350 m. Level: T1/T2.
