Schladminger Tauern

Hut hike from Schladming in Austria – 5 days

Level: T2 with some sections T3
Period: Late June – mid September

Hiking times mentioned below are adjusted to hiking with kids.

Day 1: Parkplatz Ursprungalm (1610 m) – Ignaz-Mattishütte (1986 m) – Fahrlechhütte (1648 m) – 8,2 km, 4:30, ↑ 550 m, ↓ 500 m, level: T1/T2

Start by taking a bus from Schladming to Parkplatz Ursprungalm. The trail begins on a well-marked alpine path leading toward Ignaz-Mattishütte. The ascent is steady, passing through alpine meadows with occasional rocky sections. After a break at Ignaz-Mattishütte, the trail descends towards Fahrlechhütte, passing through rolling landscapes. This part of the route includes some steeper sections but is generally suitable for families with kids.

Day 2: Fahrlechhütte to the Keinprechthütte (1850 m) – 4,5 km, 2:00  ↑ 370 m, ↓ 150 m, level: T2. From the Keinprechthütte to the Landawirseehütte (1985 m): 4,5 km, 2:30 ↑ 420 m, ↓ 310 m. Level: T2

The first section to the Keinprechthütte winds through forested paths and open alpine pastures. The trail climbs gradually, and is a comfortable hike with a mix of shaded forest paths and rocky, panoramic viewpoints. After the Keinprechthütte the path becomes more rugged with some steeper sections as you gain altitude towards Landawirseehütte. This segment features beautiful alpine lakes, rugged rocky landscapes, and scenic ridges.

Day 3: Landawirseehütte – Gollinghütte (1641): 5.3 km, 3:30, ↑ 500 m, ↓ 850 m. Level: T2

This section involves a mix of ascents and descents. The trail initially climbs to a mountain pass with impressive panoramic views of the Schladminger Tauern before descending steeply through rocky terrain towards Gollinghütte. Along the way, you pass alpine meadows, small streams, and potentially grazing cattle. Gollinghütte is well-known for its authentic mountain atmosphere and hearty Austrian meals.

Day 4: Gollinghütte – Preintalerhütte (1657 m) – 11,4 km, 4:30-5:00, ↑ 600 m, ↓ 600 m. Level: T2.

This is a longer day but with moderate elevation changes. The trail meanders through lush alpine valleys, crossing wooden bridges and waterfalls, offering a landscape with diverse flora. You will pass the famous Riesachsee, an nice place for a break. Eventually, the trail reaches Preintalerhütte, nestled in a beautiful mountain setting.

Alternative ending: If you want to shorten the hike, you can exit the route at Parkplatz Riesachfälle, taking a bus back to Schladming.

Day 5: Preintalerhütte – Parkplatz Riesachfälle: 6,2 km, 2:00,  600 m. Take the ‘Wanderbus’ back to Schladming. Level: T1/T2

A gentle descent through forested trails, following the river down toward Riesachfälle, one of the highest waterfalls in Styria. This final stretch is easy-going. At the parking lot, take the Wanderbus back to Schladming.
